About The Position

The director for Veterans Resource Center (VRC) provides leadership and management in developing, implementing and sustaining a comprehensive student veterans program.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Psychology, Education, Sociology, Law Enforcement or related degree with one year of professional experience in a Veterans, Higher Education, or related setting or Bachelor's Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Psychology, Education, Sociology, Law Enforcement or related degree with two year of professional experience in a Veterans, Higher Education, or related setting.
  • Knowledge about supporting veterans, student veterans, active duty students and dependents in achieving academic and personal success.
  • Experience with fiscal management, project management and event planning
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Effective written and interpersonal communication skills to reach a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population, faculty and staff

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in the administration, management and strategic planning efforts for the Veterans Resource Center.
  • Provide leadership for student veterans, active-duty students and their dependents.
  • Identify and implement practices, programs and services that support recruitment, student success and retention.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with federal, local, state, and regional veteran organizations, such as the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Health Care Systems, Minnesota Department of Veteran Affairs regional coordinator and regional veterans' affairs programs and organizations.
  • Work directly with campus VA certifying official.
  • Collaborate with on-site Regional Coordinator of MDVA.
  • Serve as a primary resource and provide expertise to campus stakeholders on veteran policies, procedures and practices.
  • Provide fiscal management including developing and allocating annual budget, collaborating on fundraising initiatives and student scholarships, while applying university policies, procedures, and practices (e.g., foundation accounts, business services, payroll and purchasing, student fee and gen fund accounts.)
  • Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Programs to seek and submit grant proposals.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with campus departments, e.g., Admissions, Financial Aid, Business Services, Records and Registration, University Communications, Academic Affairs division, and Division of Student Affairs departments to ensure the University is compliant with Federal and State Regulations
  • Provide leadership and department presence at major recruitment events and transition programs (e.g., Advising and Registration, Transfer Student Days, Huskies First Four, welcome programs.)
  • Provides direction for implementation of processes and procedures for institutional offices to maintain federal and state compliance and regulations relating to veterans.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of outreach and educational programs, including development of training materials related to awareness and understanding of veteran issues and needs.
  • Lead in the development and implementation of outreach materials, presentations, website materials, and educational materials for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external constituents (e.g., regional coordinator of Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Army, Local VFW, Legions the Department of Veterans Affairs and more) in the development and implementation of training and education initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Develop and implement specific on-going Veteran's related training and educational sessions for current and prospective students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • Provide support strategies to campus constituents on the unique needs of veteran students and ways to increase student success both in and out of classroom settings.
  • Serve as a liaison to faculty and staff regarding veteran student issues and concerns.
  • Provide information, referrals, advocacy and support that align with Federal and State policies.
  • Serve as a member of the regional center for Beyond the Yellow-Ribbon (Warriors to Citizens) Initiatives.
  • Lead and collaborate with University departments and broader community to create programs relevant for students and their families, including Veterans day and other observances.
  • Advise, recruit and guide the veteran student organization to ensure additional levels of support for our VRC populations.
  • Provide leadership in the hiring and work direction of VRC staff.
  • Lead the hiring process, provide training, work direction and evaluation of the VRC office manager.
  • Hire, coach and supervise a student staff of typically 6-10.
  • Other duties as assigned.
