About The Position

The purpose of the Veterans Assistance Specialist is to help veterans and their families understand, access, and obtain the federal, state, and local benefits and resources available to them. The Veterans Assistance Specialist will serve as a resource coordinator, connecting older adult veterans and their families to a wide range of programs and services that support independence and maximize available benefits. Collaborate and partner with federal, state, and local organizations (to include for-profit businesses) to help enhance the quality of life of Veterans and their families through community resources, education, and awareness of services by maintaining information pertinent to GetCareSC and SC ACT Resource Database(s) and their searching-related functions. Serves as a liaison for the agency by attending meetings, conferences, workshops, and other in-service training programs related to initiatives or services for veterans. Support the identification, development, and management of grant opportunities that enhance services for older adult veterans and their families, ensuring alignment with agency priorities and compliance with all funding requirements.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and relevant program experience are required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, policies and procedures, in addition to military service-related legislation.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with other employees, veterans, military personnel, dependents, organizations, government agencies and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and independently making decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Military affiliation (including past service members, reservists, spouses, or family members) is a plus, but not required.
