About The Position

Operation Kindness Humane Society is seeking a Vet Tech (Veterinary Technician) to join our team! Operation Kindness is a pioneer in Texas for assisting animals in need of veterinary care, companionship and most of all, a home. As animals require medical care each day of the year, weekend and holiday availability is necessary. We offer time and a half pay on 10 holidays during the year.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum one year experience as a Vet Tech Assistant or similar role, previous Vet Tech experience preferred.
Know how to draw blood and set catheters
Familiar with assisting with anesthesia strongly preferred
Know how to intubate strongly preferred
Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment.
Supports Operation Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization.
Is able to work equally well with paid staff members, clients and volunteers.
Is able to relate well to persons with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
Has a positive attitude; is open to new ideas.
Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively in English

Nice To Haves

Veterinary Technician Certification desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

Ensures that all shelter animals receive proper veterinary care in a timely manner.
Takes all necessary precautions and follows shelter policies to ensure that animals are not unduly exposed to illness or injury.
Makes daily rounds of the cat and dog rooms to ensure that all animals are removed to isolation at the earliest sign of illness or distress.
Assist Operation Kindness Veterinarians in procedures as requested.
Promptly checks-in arriving animals (within 24 hours of arrival) according to shelter procedure.
Dispenses mediations and gives injections in accordance with shelter and veterinary guidelines and government regulations.
Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal exams, urinalyses, fungal cultures, heartworm checks; draws blood for laboratory analysis. Maintains file of lab test results and ensures that they are also added to patients’ records.
Transports animals to and from off-site veterinarians.
Schedules spay and neuter surgeries.
Prepares, stocks, and maintains the treatment room, the isolation room, and the surgery rooms; cleans surgery room and equipment after each use.
Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies. Properly stores all medications.
Maintains timely, accurate, complete, and legible health records including spay and neuter surgeries.
Verify veterinarian visits for billing.
Provides clients with written medical records of procedures and vaccinations administered at Operation Kindness.
Counsels clients as needed on animal care, explaining dosages/purpose of medications being sent home and reinforcing home care follow-up treatments and care; ensures that conversations are on a level that is easily understood by non-veterinarians; makes client feels welcome in asking questions and having concerns about their pets.
Returns, on the same day, all phone calls from clients with medical-related concerns about their adopted animals.
Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to any Manager or above immediately.
Reports any unsafe working conditions to any Manager or above immediately.
Maintains client, donor, volunteer, and staff confidentiality at all times.
Follows SOPs and other safety regulations at all times.
Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
Attends staff meetings.
Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor.
Performs other duties as requested or assigned
