About The Position

The Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC) is seeking a Vet Research/Health Tech to provide research support, routine health care, and animal husbandry for animals at the center. This role involves performing manual and technical husbandry tasks directly related to the care of and research support for laboratory animals. Duties will be performed professionally and require interaction with investigative staff. The specific tasks and work assignment areas will vary based on animal populations, care requirements, service needs, and staffing demands, potentially including work during non-regular hours, weekends, holidays, or overtime. The position supports the ONPRC's mission to improve human health through nonhuman primate research.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
Six months of experience providing husbandry for animals (paid or voluntary), such as watering, feeding, changing bedding, housing, or checking animal health.
Basic knowledge of animal care, which can be demonstrated through the care of pets, farm animals, or 4-H animals.
Possession of a valid Driver's License and ability to drive DCM/ONPRC vehicles on and off campus as required.
Professional and service-oriented attitude.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to consistently interact with research investigative staff, supervisors, and co-workers in a positive and constructive manner.
Ability to use proper techniques to safely perform standard clinical procedures, including accurately calculating medication dosages.
Sufficient dexterity and manual skills to safely perform (or learn to perform) basic animal husbandry and animal handling using proper techniques.
Ability to use a computer keyboard.
Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written formats with both technical and professional staff.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor's degree in a related field.
18 months of experience in the health care of experimental animals in a research setting and/or as a veterinary technician or assistant.
Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT), or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

Assist with, coordinate, and complete a large volume of tasks following established research protocols and procedures for laboratory animals.
Participate in the development, coordination, and implementation of institution-wide animal care and use procedures.
Implement established procedures and policies governing the safe and humane care and use of laboratory animals.
Safely perform standard veterinary procedures, including venipuncture, medication dose calculations, and administration of medications via various routes.
Collect body fluids.
Participate in general animal health surveillance by observing animals, recognizing abnormalities, and reporting/recording observations.
Perform animal health procedures such as weighing, TB testing, and blood collections.
Capture, restrain, identify, sex, and transport common laboratory animals.
Feed and water animals.
Sanitize animal primary housing, shelters, equipment, and facilities.
Assist with facility maintenance, including replacing drinking water valves, simple surface preparation and painting, and replacing lighting bulbs.
Unload and store feed bags (25-50lbs each).
Assist with group-housed animal capture and processing.
Provide care for animals in the nursery.
Operate equipment such as cage washers, floor scrubbers, autoclaves, pressure washers, scales, and veterinary care instruments.
Complete and submit data processing forms.
Access and input information from computerized animal record files using a computer keyboard.
Assist with the acquisition and maintenance of regulatory, research, and animal records and reports.
Perform other duties as assigned.
