The Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) at Cornell University provides veterinary services and resources to Cornell’s research and teaching community. Its three-year, ACLAM-recognized residency offers flexible, balanced training across a wide variety of laboratory animal species and research. Residents receive progressively greater Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and clinical responsibilities, along with resources to develop leadership skills and prepare for careers in laboratory animal medicine. At Cornell’s AAALAC-accredited institution, residents gain hands-on experience advancing humane care and responsible use of animals. Cornell’s agricultural emphasis provides a distinctive opportunity to train in the management of research agricultural species. Training develops skills in diagnosing and treating conditions in laboratory animal species, communicating with investigators and providing veterinary support, understanding animal husbandry in biomedical and agricultural settings, performing veterinary roles within an IACUC, and implementing traditional and recently developed animal models. Cornell has large- and small-animal ABSL2 facilities and a small-animal ABSL3 facility. Residents may rotate within the College of Veterinary Medicine, including in anesthesiology and pathology, and may take outside institutional externships to gain nonhuman primate experience or explore other interests. They can work alongside boarded veterinary specialists at Cornell University Hospital for Animals and access diagnostic tools, imaging modalities, treatment options, and basic laboratory space for benchtop work. Research mentors and collaborators may be available through academic departments. Previous clinical experience is preferred but not required; residents are expected to demonstrate clinical abilities and knowledge at a novice level as defined by AAVMC CBVE. Applicants with credentials from foreign and American colleges of veterinary medicine are welcome. The residency is a three-year term. The candidate must hold a DVM or equivalent and possess, or be able to obtain, a valid New York State driver’s license. The ideal candidate is independent, highly motivated, communicates well, and works effectively on a team. A pre-employment background check and a non-compete agreement are required.
