About The Position

The Vessel Quality Safety and Environmental (VQSE) Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with various maritime regulations, conducting audits and inspections, preparing crews for safe work practices, investigating incidents, and representing the company in safety-related matters. This role involves promoting a safe work environment, staying updated on regulations, and performing additional duties as required to support the company's mission.

Requirements

  • Experience in maritime vessel compliance, inspections, auditing, investigations, or vessel operations/engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license required.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required.
  • Must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening.
  • Willingness to undergo a criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal degree in Safety Management or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the maritime industry.
  • Experience preparing vessels for external inspections and audits, including working with third-party organizations.
  • ISO 9001 Auditor Training or equivalent accredited training.
  • SIRE or OVID inspection experience.
  • U.S. Coast Guard experience or equivalent in inspections, investigations, or marine safety.
  • Ability to complete/pass an approved surveyor and auditor course.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 50% or more.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard, OSHA, ISM, TMSA & customer requirements by boarding company vessels.
  • Conduct internal audits, surveys, and inspections.
  • Identify deficiencies and collaborate with crews and other departments to develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in and represent the company during external audits, surveys, and inspections.
  • Prepare vessel crews and shore-based staff for safe work practices.
  • Disseminate safety information, assist in developing safety training programs, and conduct training sessions.
  • Perform incident analyses to identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Submit required reports to the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Attend U.S. Coast Guard and industry-sponsored events.
  • Respond to customer information requests.
  • Serve as a liaison to the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal and state agencies during incidents.
  • Observe and report unsafe conditions and trends, implement corrective actions, and recommend preventive measures.
  • Draft safety alerts as needed.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment.
  • Adhere to company standards and Safety Management System policies.
  • Alert management to potential concerns, coach others on safe work habits, and foster a culture of safety.
  • Enhance safety management expertise through workshops, professional publications, and networking.
  • Stay updated on and interpret federal and state regulations for relevance and implementation.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support overall company mission and goals.
