About The Position

The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe Natural Resources Department is seeking a Per Diem Vessel Operator/Fisheries Monitor to support fisheries, research, and resource management activities. This unique position combines marine vessel operations, fisheries monitoring, and field research while helping protect and manage valuable natural resources throughout the Olympic Peninsula. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced mariners looking for meaningful, hands-on work on the water.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Washington State Boater Education Card.
Completion of a Motorboat Operator Certification/Training Course (MOCC/MOTC) or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to safely and proficiently operate vessels up to 40 feet and associated navigational equipment.
Current First Aid/CPR Certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Nice To Haves

Completion of a Safety at Sea and/or Cold-Water Survival course.
Experience with dive operations and dive safety.
DAN O2 Certification.
HAZWOPER Certification.
American Indian/Alaska Native preference applies.

Responsibilities

Operate marine vessels up to 40 feet for research and management activities.
Participate in Dungeness and Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge research and management activities.
Monitor shellfish and finfish harvests.
Conduct dive surveys and research.
Participate in crab and shrimp test fisheries and research.
Assist with habitat and resource enhancement and restoration.
Perform water quality and biotoxin sampling.
Inspect vessels and associated equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Maintain vessel logs.
Utilize navigational equipment and weather forecasts to ensure safe on-the-water operations.
Ensure all U.S. Coast Guard required safety equipment is onboard and functional.
Provide clear direction to deckhands and passengers to ensure safety while underway.
Serve as the primary back-up monitor for the Tribe's commercial geoduck fishery.
Conduct on-the-water monitoring to ensure divers and vessel operators comply with Tribal fishing regulations.
Confirm diver participation, weigh harvested product, and record harvested crates.
Ensure compliance with Washington Department of Health shellfish sanitation requirements.
Respond to diver emergency situations.
Assist with weekly harvest planning and coordination with divers.
Provide boat and equipment maintenance assistance.
Adhere to all Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe policies and procedures, including safety standards and work practices.
Perform other duties as assigned.
