Fisheries Technician I
About The Position
This role involves assisting biologists with extensive field work, typically 10 hours a day, 4 days a week, in potentially inclement weather conditions. Responsibilities include data collection, maintenance of survey gear and boats, and data entry. The technician will gain hands-on experience in fisheries management, with a focus on native mussel surveys, invasive mussel early detection, and fish health surveys on Lake Roosevelt. The position requires completing boater safety training and extensive training in various field and laboratory safety protocols. Personal protective equipment, including footwear and life jackets, will be provided. Other duties as assigned. It is anticipated that Techs will work with native/invasive mussels from June to October and with Fisheries from November to May.
Requirements
- Willing and able to function as an entry-level fisheries technician
- Punctual, safety oriented, and willing to work long days in field and office settings
- Reliable transportation to/from Fisheries offices in Wellpinit or Airway Heights
- Able to understand and follow safety protocols
- Willing to work in inclement weather (heat, wind, rain, exposure)
- Willing to work flexible and long hours in office and field when necessary, including remote areas
- Willing and able to work effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings, individually or in group settings
- Willing to travel which will include overnight stays in hotels
- Able to utilize PC computers and software
- Able to learn how to enter data into MS Excel and utilize data collection applications
- Able to handle extended periods of sun exposure and limited access to restroom facilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences
- Strong communication skills and willingness to provide responsive support
- Respect for Tribal governance and an understanding of Tribal structures or a desire to learn the uniqueness of Tribal operations and communities
- Understanding of ecological principles, biodiversity, and the management of natural resources
- Able to pack and carry 30lbs over various terrain
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License, good driving record for insurance purposes
- Completed High School Diploma or G.E.D
- Must have ability to read, analyze, and interpret basic written protocols
- Must have ability to respond effectively to general inquiries
- Must be willing and able to ask questions to improve understanding of written or oral
- Must have basic reasoning abilities, with particular emphasis on maintaining bodily safety
- Must have ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism
- Regularly required to talk or hear
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, and to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, also climb and get into confined spaces
- Must be able to safely lift and carry 30lbs
- Basic understanding of computers and Microsoft Office Suite
