About The Position

Performs tasks in the repair, diagnostics, and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment; responds to road calls in the field for emergency repairs. Delegates work to and/or trains subordinate staff as needed; ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Diagnoses vehicle maintenance problems and performs computer testing on electronic systems; determines required parts; prepares repair orders and inputs data into computer; schedules vehicles for maintenance and/or repair; delivers vehicles scheduled for services by external vendors. Overhauls gasoline or diesel engines; installs clutches; realigns front ends; performs necessary welding; disassembles engines; inspects parts for wear and damage; repairs or replaces parts and reassembles engines; overhauls regulator and starter systems; rebuilds carburetors, fuel pumps, water pumps, distributors and other accessories; tunes engines; repairs air conditioning systems, brake systems, front and rear suspensions, steering components and exhaust systems; repairs flat tires; tows in vehicles needing repair. Operates fork lift; checks fuel and fluid levels and fills as needed; operates diagnostic equipment; replaces windows and windshields; test drives equipment or vehicle after work is performed to ensure proper operation; Opens and closes shop as needed; responds to road calls in the field for emergency repairs; assists other mechanics in the completion of work orders; helps with snow removal; performs maintenance on furniture as needed. Maintains log of vehicle repairs orders; maintains shop and work area ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Serves as Fleet Service Manager in his/her absence as requested.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six (6) years of formal training and/or experience in vehicle service, maintenance, and/or repair
  • Certification by Professional Automotive or Mechanics Association may substitute for two (2) of the required years
  • ASE certification preferred
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR, crane and forklift certifications
  • Considerable knowledge of automotive equipment operating systems, including modern computer systems, electronics and fuel systems
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment manuals
  • Considerable knowledge of tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal emissions requirements, Clean Air Act and ozone protection laws
  • Considerable knowledge of safety regulations
  • Considerable knowledge of general servicing of equipment
  • Ability to operate light and heavy duty equipment
  • Ability to interpret manuals
  • Ability to use tools, read gauges and operate diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble engines properly
  • Ability to determine parts needed for repair
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Drivers License
