About The Position

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Vehicle Mechanic - Aviation. This job announcement will remain open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time. This role performs preventive maintenance and inspects, diagnoses, and repairs a variety of County vehicles. The position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Requirements

  • Requires two (2) years journey level experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment or closely related experience.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) access with Customs and Border Protection Seal.
  • Ability to obtain / maintain Airfield driving privileges.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Airfield non-movement area driving privileges.
  • All Aviation Maintenance Division employees must be able to perform rotational shift work and/or overtime (holidays, weekends and emergencies) in support of operational needs in a twenty-four (24) hour per day/seven (7) days per week operation and in accordance with a collective bargaining agreement, if applicable.
  • All Aviation Department employees must possess the ability to interact courteously with the public, Airport vendors, contractors and fellow employees to maintain a professional work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes a positive work environment.
  • The employee must be able to work in various locations/environments including office, warehouse, airport terminals and the airfield.
  • All Aviation Department Maintenance Division staff are essential positions.
  • At any given time, staff may be required to be on the Airfield, in the Terminals, or in a work environment which conditions may expose them to weather, humid conditions; smoke, fumes or dust; tight or confined spaces; hazardous materials; or shaking, rocking and or vibrating equipment, loud noise, stairs and ramps, and large moving equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs detailed maintenance on heavy duty equipment and light equipment ranging from heavy duty tractors to small lawn mowers.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of damaged and malfunctioning equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance including changing/adding fluids, inspecting brakes and belts, replacing filters, inspecting suspension, steering systems, lights, and tires.
  • Performs unscheduled repairs such as troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems and replacing of essential parts in shop or at worksite and occasionally after hours.
  • Performs tire service inspection and repair including mounting and balancing both light and heavy duty off-road tires.
  • Maintains parts procurement; researches part numbers, vehicle application, serial number; searches for parts, finds best prices, and searches for vendors, dealers, etc.; orders parts online or by phone; purchases and picks up parts; files transmittals for payments made with credit card and any other paperwork necessary for the agency.
  • Works offsite to provide service or repair disabled or non-transportable vehicles or machinery; maintains proper performance in daily operation or emergency repair.
  • Writes work orders; submits invoices; assigns work to shop mechanics.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
