About The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to cars, light trucks, SUV’s, trailers and small equipment to ensure Gila County and it’s employees have safe, reliable, and properly operating vehicles and equipment. This position requires the operation of service trucks and occasionally some light and heavy duty trucks and equipment in addition to ensuring a clean and safe workplace.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years combined of directly related on the job experience in either car, truck or equipment maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • Basic training in gasoline engine maintenance, brakes, steering & suspension, basic electrical, climate control and gasoline engine repair required.
  • Routine maintenance knowledge.
  • Knowledge of electrical/electronic systems for vehicles and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Understanding of mechanical machines and tools.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials (handling and disposal).

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, minor and major overhauls, car/truck/equipment performance evaluations, and comprehensive multi-point safety inspections on all County vehicles and equipment to include sedans, SUV’s, light duty trucks, trailers, ATV’s, small gasoline engines, small equipment, generators, pumps, law enforcement equipment, and other specialized types of equipment as required.
  • Performs diagnostics to determine the nature of repairs required to make the vehicle/equipment safe and operable, including performing road tests before and after the repairs.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on gasoline engines, diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, drivetrain components, tires, brakes, steering and suspension, exhaust, emissions, electrical/electronic, and climate control systems.
  • Assists with heavy duty vehicles/equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Uses a variety of computers, computer software, laptops, scanner/printers, diagnostic equipment, scan tools, hand tools, power tools, service trucks and specialized equipment such as automotive lifts, pressure washers, cranes, welders, forklifts, and similar types of equipment as required.
  • Documents and records repair and maintenance information both on paper and electronically via fleet management software.
  • Operates a variety of service trucks and towing equipment to provide field service maintenance and repairs, and emergency services for County vehicles and equipment. These services sometimes are provided after hours as deemed necessary as part of a rotational on-call schedule.
  • Designs, fabricates, modifies, repairs and paints vehicle accessories, radio support mounts, emergency light mounts; cargo hold-downs, supports, steps and ladders; uses grinders, plasma cutters, torches, and a variety of welding styles and techniques.
  • Installs equipment, vehicle/equipment modifications, emergency lighting and decaling such as stripes and emblems on law enforcement and emergency vehicles.
  • Maintains and keeps a clean and organized workplace including sweeping, mopping, picking up tools, and cleaning shop benches; clean and fuel vehicles; picks up and delivers vehicles and equipment in the field.
