About The Position

University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) to join a multifaceted team covering vascular and thoracic surgery. The APP will be trained to cover all aspects of vascular and thoracic care and will have the opportunity to cross-cover other APP-led service lines. The role involves providing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to critically ill patients, obtaining medical histories, examining patients, ordering and interpreting tests, making diagnoses, and ordering treatments. The APP will also administer therapeutic procedures, instruct and counsel patients and families, and may assist in the operating room. The position emphasizes collaboration with the physician care team and adherence to high reliability organization principles.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in vascular and thoracic surgery.
  • PAs: Bachelor’s degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician’s Assistants are required.
  • PAs: Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • NPs: Bachelor’s degree, RN experience, and completion of Acute Nurse Practitioner degree.
  • NPs: Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from UM Capital Region Health’s Medical Staff Office.
  • Maintenance of BLS /ACLS certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • ATLS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be trained to cover all aspects of vascular and thoracic care.
  • Have the opportunity to cross cover other APP led service lines.
  • Perform routine and expanded job descriptions as listed in the provider's delegation agreement.
  • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to critically ill patients.
  • Obtain medical histories, examine patients, round daily, order and interpret tests, make initial diagnoses, and order treatments.
  • Communicate effectively with attending physicians, other medical teams, team members, and patients and their families.
  • Administer therapeutic procedures such as placement of intracranial monitoring systems, extra ventricular drains, VP shunt taps, suturing, and wound care.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and families.
  • May first assist in the operating room when necessary.
  • Demonstrate competence and skill in required tasks and procedures.
  • Demonstrate skills in making effective decisions, quality improvement activities, problem solving, crisis management, organizing work and meeting deadlines, attention to detail and follow through, resource management, ability to work successfully with diverse types of individuals including management, clinical staff, and the public.
  • Meet all team and organizational deadlines for task requests, project/ initiative submissions, evaluations, compliance items.
  • Perform according to Maryland Board of Physician or Board of Nursing standards and expanded job description procedural protocols.
  • Maintain a procedure complication rate less than the national average.
  • Facilitate excellence in quality assurance and the delivery of patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization.
  • Provide optimal quality of patient care while following safety guidelines.
  • Contribute to cohesive group relations; use open communication to resolve problems in and between departments.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional department and organizational core values.

  • Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicate the same to those in charge.

  • Participate in APP Council meetings, Heart and Vascular Institute team meetings, APP and team educational opportunities, and other learning opportunities as they arise.
  • Engage in leadership activities including but not limited to APP representation on committees, training and education of other APPs, or specific event or team.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and competency in required subspecialty.
  • Complete at least 50 hours of Category I CME every two years.
