About The Position

Under general direction, the Vascular Technologist II supports the Manager in planning, organizing, and directing all activities related to patient care within the Imaging Center at UChicago Medicine's Hyde Park campus. This role involves assessing patients for pathology in all veins and arteries of the body (excluding the heart and certain visceral vessels) and conducting exams using Doppler, duplex imaging, and plethysmography, combined with patient history and physical assessment, to identify various vascular pathologies. The technologist will also participate in research studies by gathering data and following protocols developed by the Vascular department, and contribute to expanding the knowledge of vascular imaging among colleagues within UCMC and the profession.

Requirements

  • Meet present requirement standards for RVT from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or RVS from Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS).

Responsibilities

  • Performs the following examinations on patients as schedule demands either in the Lab or at their bedside according to approved vascular laboratory procedures under minimal supervision; Venous Duplex (assessment for deep vein thrombosis, venous insufficiency and vein mapping), Arterial segmental pressures, continuous wave Doppler waveforms arterial duplex scan, PPG measurements, graft surveillance and arterial mapping, Extracranial and Intracranial Carotid and vertebral artery duplex and Abdominal duplex to assess bypass grafts, stents, AAA, mesenteric, aortoiliac and renal artery stenosis/occlusion.
  • Additional responsibilities also include intraoperative procedures and scans following research protocols.
  • Prepare preliminary reports after completing exam and contacts the referring physician according to laboratory protocol set by the Vascular Laboratory Medical Director.
  • Performs Team Leader (daily operational) responsibilities including, but not limited to, triaging I/P and O/P urgent and non-urgent add-on requests, communicating on behalf of the Vascular Lab team with other department members in concert with the objectives of the Vascular Lab and UCMC, management of patient/family issues, escalating appropriately to the Vascular Lab leaders.
  • Assesses appropriateness of exam(s) ordered and is capable of modifying said exam based on an assessment of the patient's history, physical exam and symptoms; within the guidelines set by the Vascular Laboratory Medical Director.
  • Performs research, quality assessment and improvement activities and maintenance of lab equipment to ensure quality patient examinations, patient safety, patient care and activities needed to maintain accreditation of the vascular laboratory by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories.
  • Participates in the didactic and hands on training of students in vascular technology, techniques and interpretation. Students include, but are not limited to, Rush Vascular Ultrasound program interns, clinical vascular nurse/fellow trainee technologists, Radiology and Vascular surgery fellows, Radiology and Surgery residents, medical students, visiting physicians and visiting technologists as directed by the Imaging Center Lead.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for Venous Duplex exams during nights/weekends as directed by the Imaging Center Leader or Manager.
  • Assists with triage of after-hours requests from ordering providers regarding urgent exams and follows escalation processes.
  • Performs administrative and other duties as assigned including but not limited to; scheduling of patients, maintaining QA logs and databases, monitoring and replenishing supply and inventory.
  • Provides basic nursing care to each patient while they are in the laboratory.
  • Able to troubleshoot issues with imaging units, EPIC, PenVasc and PACS.
  • Escalate issues to IT and support services as needed.
  • Acquires reports or other data from PenVasc and other databases for use in research and quality improvement.
  • Continually increases knowledge of vascular disease by participation in educational opportunities, including developing abstracts and/ making presentations at professional societies and/or UCMC meetings.
