About The Position

The person in this role provides the service of vascular access to pediatric patients that require intravenous (IV) therapy through peripheral IV starts, including long PIV and midline catheters. The Vascular Access Team functions with demonstrated expertise in providing care and/or consultation to pediatric patients hospital-wide requiring peripheral venous access. The Vascular Access Team is a recognized resource in providing guidance in line management, teaching and continuity planning of children with peripheral venous lines.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited school of nursing required OR Respiratory Therapy required
  • License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin OR License Respiratory Care Practitioner (28) - State of Wisconsin
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council within 180 Days required
  • Ability to work independently and utilize time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to cope with physically and mentally stressful situations.
  • Interpersonal skills which frequently involve collaborating with peers, supervisors and medical staff on issues in order to accomplish objectives for patient care.
  • Able to identify patients that have, or at risk of, difficult IV access (DIVA).
  • Knowledgeable in pain reduction techniques for IV placement.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of experience with PIV placement required
  • Direct pediatric patient care experience in ER, acute care, or critical care preferred
  • Previous experience with ultrasound guided line placement preferred

Responsibilities

  • Places IVs with the use of various vein viewing equipment including ultrasound.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and assessment skills to identify the most appropriate type of vascular access for patient (PIV, Long PIV, Midline) and appropriate site placement.
  • Acts as a clinical resource within the hospital to help assess and evaluate current lines and provide recommendations to the care team.
  • The Vascular Access Team rounds on the inpatient units to provide targeted education, infection surveillance and data collection.
  • Designs and provides ongoing staff education related to peripheral line care and maintenance.
  • Provides teaching on vascular access, aseptic technique, site & dressing care and assessment and venous access skills to nurses and physicians.
  • Demonstrates collaboration and effective communication with physicians and other clinical staff
  • Participates in hospital wide committees that include Peripheral Intravenous Infiltrates and Extravasates (PIVIE) prevention team, Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSI), Pressure Ulcer Prevention (PUP) team.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of Children’s Wisconsin operations, policies, procedures, products, programs relating to vascular access.
  • Applies current research findings in practice; introduces current research into clinical practice within specialty or treatment modality.
  • Participates in data collection related to vascular access team activities, requests, and outcomes.
  • Willingness to maintain and improve knowledge level related to vascular access.
