SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting the Executive Director of Athletics, the Varsity Head Basketball Coach is responsible to promote the philosophy of Southside Christian School Athletics within the basketball program. This role offers full-time opportunities in both athletic administration and teaching physical education. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Make Jesus Christ central to the basketball program at SCS, and disciple student athletes to equip and inspire them to be followers of Christ. Uphold and support the SCS school mission, portrait of a graduate, core values, and athletic philosophy. Seek and build relationships with and connections to student athletes of all ages by encouraging participation in basketball. Connect and communicate with parents of the players appropriately using all means of communication (verbal, social media, email, etc.). Provide oversight for the overall program, establishing a fundamental plan of development at each level of play. Assist in the hiring process of the coaches within the basketball program. Maintain the facilities that the program uses to ensure cleanliness, proper use, and a proper attitude toward the facility by the student athletes and the coaches in the program. Know and ensure compliance with the policies in the SCS Athletic Handbook as well as the Parent and Student Handbook. Know and ensure compliance with all SCHSL Rules and Guidelines including start dates, out of season, and dead season. Complete the required SCHSL courses and requirements. In collaboration with the Strength Training Coach, ensure that student athletes receive appropriate strength training for the sport. Develop a year-round basketball program in compliance with SCHSL guidelines. Ensure proper supervision of athletes in the locker rooms until practice, or the game has ended and the student athletes have left. Collect, inventory, and secure uniforms and sport specific equipment. Ensure that team roster is submitted to the Athletic Office to determine SCHSL eligibility. Effectively manage the program budget and seek appropriate approval for purchases. Provide a performance evaluation to the assistant coaches in the program. Annually assess personal and program performance by completing a self-evaluation, and meeting with athletic administration. Represent SCS mission and program appropriately with the local press, media, and the public. Ensure that any gear provides maximum student safety. Seek professional development for coaches to pursue the craft of coaching by improving their knowledge of the game through clinics, literature, videos, and discussions with other coaches. Attend meetings as required by the Executive Director of Athletics. QUALIFIED APPLICANTS: Must be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ; be involved with an evangelical, protestant church of like faith and practice; and agree with the philosophies, Statement of Faith, and Statement of Christian Life Commitment of Southside Christian School. Must be a spiritually mature, veteran Christian leader who agrees with the school's Mission, Vision, Values, Biblical Beliefs, Statement of Christian Life Commitment, and Statement of Faith. Must be a person with proven spiritual, moral, and leadership qualities, and be capable of developing a strong rapport with fellow coaches and student athletes and the SCS community. Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and training in coaching. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of previous basketball coaching experience at the high school level or higher. Must have strong organizational and leadership skills. Must have experience or knowledge of how to develop basketball programs at multiple school levels. Must have relationship with college coaches and experience with the college recruiting process. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Coaches must be able work in challenging conditions related to the sport. Coaches must be able to demonstrate techniques and skills of the sport. Coaches must be able to be physically active for extended periods, including standing, walking, and moving around the court. Coaches must be able to lift and carry equipment related to the sport. Coaches must be able to visually monitor athletes for their safety, which can require good eyesight and the ability to stand for long periods.
