About The Position

The Varsity Boys Basketball Coach (Grades 9-12) is responsible for leading and growing the basketball program at Khan Lab School. In addition to having a deep understanding of basketball, the coach should have a nuanced understanding of adolescent development and teaching practices in physical education. We are looking for a team player who has a sense of humor and a passion for working with high schoolers. This coaching position reports to the Director of Athletics & Outer Wellness.

Requirements

  • High school degree required.
  • Previous basketball coaching experience in a middle and/or high school environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the rules and regulations of basketball and an appreciation for the sport.
  • Prior experience playing basketball, and an understanding of how to teach others how to play and improve their technique.
  • Commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.
  • A passion for working with and engaging young athletes in learning experiences.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and be a team player.
  • Be reliable, punctual, and flexible.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.
  • Capability of moving about inside an office setting to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Ability to proficiently and frequently operate a computer and keyboard as well as other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, printers, and projectors.
  • Consistently practice safe working habits while using school supplies, equipment, and electronics as well as the ability to maintain a safe and hazard-free workstation for yourself and others at the school.
  • Ability to properly communicate information and ideas so other people can understand as well as the ability to ascertain and understand information communicated from others.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and run effective practices for the school’s Basketball Athletics Program.
  • Attend all games and practices while utilizing positive coaching techniques.
  • Communicate clear and consistent feedback to student-athletes, parents, and school administration.
  • Evaluate athlete performance and provide real-time instruction, balancing critique with positivity and motivation.
  • Model inclusion when welcoming new athletes to the team.
  • Act as a role model and leader at all times, gaining the respect and trust of the student-athletes, parents, and coaching colleagues.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to organize the scheduling of practices and games.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to organize transportation to sporting events, when needed.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to organize the Basketball Program's short-term, long-term, and annual needs and development.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to organize the sports equipment and uniform inventory and distribution.
  • Perform other related job duties, as needed.

Benefits

  • Pay: $30.00-34.00 per hour, depending on experience
