About The Position

The Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach is responsible for developing student-athletes’ skills, building team chemistry, and preparing the team to compete at a high level. The coach must foster leadership, promote sportsmanship, and support student-athletes’ academic success. This role requires adherence to all MIAA and GLTS policies, rules, and procedures, serving as a positive role model, and building a strong sense of pride within the team, school, and greater community. The coach must have demonstrated extensive experience coaching basketball, with a strong understanding of basketball fundamentals, player development, team strategy, and game preparation. Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles is also required. The coach is expected to demonstrate positive character, promote sportsmanship, respect, and accountability, and emphasize the importance of academic achievement. Building positive relationships with student-athletes, families, staff, and community members is crucial.

Requirements

  • Prior basketball coaching experience
  • Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals
  • Strong understanding of offensive and defensive strategies
  • Strong understanding of player development
  • Strong understanding of game management
  • Demonstrated extensive experience coaching basketball
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles
  • Understanding and consistent adherence to all MIAA and GLTS policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and expectations
  • Significant experience coaching basketball, preferably at the high school level or higher
  • At least five years of basketball coaching experience
  • Experience leading or assisting with a competitive basketball program
  • Concussion Education Certification
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • MIAA Coaches Education Certification
  • Completion of LITIX Training
  • Sport-Specific Training - NFHS approved courses
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and mentor student-athletes
  • Ability to create a safe, structured, competitive, and positive team environment
  • Strong knowledge of basketball rules, strategies, techniques
  • Strong working knowledge of and commitment to all MIAA and GLTS policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and expectations
  • Knowledge of appropriate conditioning and training practices
  • Knowledge of injury prevention
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, including CPR and AED
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to foster teamwork
  • Ability to manage conflict
  • Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents/caregivers, colleagues, and the school community
  • High school diploma or equivalent
