About The Position

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non-benefitted position. Working in a temporary capacity, provides City sponsored transportation services. Drives buses, vans, and automobiles. May give direct assistance to individuals according to their needs. Activity sites include but are not limited to door-through-door paratransit, older adult events, and walking / hiking areas.

Requirements

Minimum two years’ experience driving para-transit buses, and/or larger 22+ passenger buses.
Experience with positive customer service.
Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class C DCL with a P endorsement.
Must maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
Must pass City of Lakewood Certificate of Qualification for USDOT Physical or Fit for Duty Physical, including initial drug and alcohol screening.
Incumbents will be subject to random drug and/or alcohol screenings and must maintain a current Certificate of Qualification for a USDOT Physical or Fit for Duty Physical.
Satisfactory criminal background check is required.
Satisfactory post-offer physical exam is required.
In addition, when applicable, there may be additional testing in order to adhere to CDL requirements.
Knowledge of Denver metro area geography, structures, streets and numbering systems.
Must be able to interact in a positive manner and treat with respect and courtesy a diverse range of individuals, some who may have varying mental or physical abilities.
Ability to be patient, dependable and responsible while working in an unpredictable environment.
Ability to be attentive to details such as riders’ needs, vehicles’ responsiveness, operations, and conditions, and recording required information on a daily log.
Ability to maintain order on a moving vehicle using established disciplinary techniques.
City of Lakewood CPR/First Aide Certification, or capable of obtaining CPR/First Aide Certification, as necessary.

Nice To Haves

Experience with mountain driving during all types of weather preferred.
Experience working with children and youth, older adults, and people with disabilities preferred.
Experience operating wheelchair lifts and securement systems, including child restraint systems, within established safety practices and guidelines preferred.

Responsibilities

Maintains a valid driver’s license with satisfactory motor vehicle record.
Maintains valid DOT Physical or a Fit for Duty Physical.
Complies with all federal, state, and local rules, statutes, ordinances and codes, including vehicle inspections, licensing, observing traffic signals and speed limits, and requirements for seat belts, snow tires and tire chains.
Complies with US Department of Transportation and City of Lakewood drug-free workplace regulations, including random testing.
Uses safe driving practices, including defensive driving techniques, through city traffic, highly congested areas, expressways/highways, residential side streets, and in severe weather conditions.
Keeps accurate records of passengers, trips by purpose, vehicle mileage, fuel and oil consumption, and work hours.
Fosters passenger trust and reduces fears by providing a predictable, high-quality transportation environment focused on customer service.
Assists riders with boarding and leaving vehicle, doors, stairs, curbs, ramps, ice and snow, seat belts, child safety seats, wheelchair lifts and wheelchair securement systems.
May assist riders as needed with sitting down or standing up, providing stability only, not lifting the rider.
Assists riders with storing and securing mobility devices.
Assists riders with maneuvering a manual wheelchair chair on ramps and walk paths, into buildings / destination, over curbs, or one to two stairs that are curb height.
Assists riders with carrying packages or groceries.
Adheres to City policies and procedures including emergency situations; uses approved standards for bus evacuations.
Reports immediately to the supervisor all incidents of accident, illnesses, injuries and other emergencies.
Per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Part 396, ensures that vehicles are in a safe operating condition by conducting complete pre- and post-trip inspections and routine maintenance including under-the-hood fluid checks, tire pressure, fueling systems, visibility, and appearance of vehicle (exterior and interior).
Reports a malfunction immediately to the on-duty dispatcher and takes vehicle to Lakewood Fleet Maintenance Division for repairs and preventive maintenance as directed.
Prior to departing for trip, determines if weather conditions are appropriate to ensure safe driving to destinations. Informs coordinator and immediate supervisor if trip should be cancelled due to inclement weather.
Complies with OSHA regulations specific to occupational exposure to blood and other potentially hazardous materials, including the clean-up and disposal of human body fluids. Complies with OSHA regulations specific to appropriate footwear.
Arrives at place of disembarkation at an appropriate time to allow pre-trip inspections, review trip maps, directions and participant trip roster, load equipment, and account for participants prior to departing.
Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE, a safety violation can be taken.
When possible and as needed, maintains radio communications with the Transportation Dispatcher.
Requires regular and prompt attendance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
