About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Software and Societal Systems (S3D) department within the School of Computer Science is seeking a UX/UI Researcher for a new interdisciplinary project focused on the development and evaluation of Privacy Technology for Smart Cities. This role is ideal for someone with a recent master's degree in HCI or a related field. The project involves extending existing Internet of Things Privacy Infrastructure, developed by Prof. Norman Sadeh, in collaboration with the City of Long Beach. The work will include deployment, design, and piloting of new functionality, including Generative AI features, with actual end-users in Long Beach, California. The researcher will work closely with the principal investigator under limited supervision and have opportunities to contribute to research publications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1-3 years of experience required.
  • Strong UX/UI design skills.
  • Experience in user-centered design is a must.
  • Experience collaborating with others in the context of large-scale research and software projects.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Some front-end development experience.
  • Some prior mobile app development experience would be particularly relevant.
  • Interest in usable privacy and security.

Responsibilities
