UX Designer

Walden Robotics•Cambridge, MA
•$198,750 - $265,000

About The Position

Walden Robotics is hiring an early, high-ownership UX Designer to create interfaces for general-purpose robots working alongside people. The role involves working closely with users to understand their needs and designing intuitive interfaces for complex, real-time work. The designer will own work from foundational research through prototyping and validation across immersive spatial interfaces, fleet management applications, and internal operational tools. This is a scrappy, multifaceted role suited to a hands-on builder who sets a high bar for craft and quality and wants to help shape the design culture of a growing team. The role partners with users, engineering, and operations to map workflows across people, robots, and tools; deliver and deploy interfaces; test them with operations teams; and establish design practice foundations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated interaction and visual design craft, with a portfolio showing clarity and usability in complex, data-rich, or real-time experiences.
  • Strong systems and service thinking, with the ability to design coherent journeys across multiple touchpoints and handoffs.
  • Ability to independently run discovery and usability testing and translate findings into design decisions.
  • A track record of thriving in ambiguity, taking on multiple responsibilities, and independently moving from an unclear problem to a shipped solution.
  • A bias toward prototyping in tools such as Figma, low-fidelity mockups, or code to learn and iterate quickly.
  • Expertise or interest in human factors and human-robot interaction, including latency, presence, situational awareness, operator trust, and fatigue.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience designing VR, AR, or other spatial/3D interfaces, with understanding of interaction, comfort, and ergonomic considerations for head-mounted displays.
  • Experience designing for robotics or gaming.
  • Familiarity with Unity, Unreal, or other 3D/XR design tools.
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems.
  • Comfort using AI or agentic tools to accelerate and improve work.

Responsibilities

  • Design the immersive VR-based interface used to understand robot behavior and direct robots with confidence and comfort.
  • Own end-to-end service design by mapping work across people, robots, and tools and designing the connections needed for a seamless experience.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to build and deploy interfaces with quality.
  • Conduct discovery and usability testing with the operations team and iterate based on findings.
  • Help establish the design practice, including craft, design systems, standards, and culture.

Benefits

  • Competitive total compensation program.
  • Annual cash bonus.
  • Company equity.
  • Company-subsidized insurance programs.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Daily lunch.
