About The Position

Herzog Transit Services, Inc. is looking for a Mechanic/Utility Worker in Albuquerque, NM. This is an entry-level position that provides on-the-job training. The role involves servicing, maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing rail equipment in compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements and Company policies and procedures. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurately completing equipment inspection, work order, and other forms in a timely manner. The position requires working with car and locomotive systems, sub-systems, and components of rail rolling stock, performing standard maintenance tasks including mechanical, electrical, and electro-pneumatic work on both car and locomotive, and inspection and cleaning, including servicing restrooms. The role also involves maintaining a clean work area, tools, and shop equipment, and participating in required ongoing training. Regular and consistent engagement, participation, and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors, along with regular and predictable attendance and punctuality, are requirements for this position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, repair, replacement or rebuilding mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of electrical tools, equipment and the measurements necessary to meet established standards.
  • Some computer skills.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate proficiently.
  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
  • Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind.
  • Must be able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program.
  • Welding and cutting experience.
  • Experience in the maintenance of railroad equipment.
  • Ability to read and troubleshoot with electrical schematics.
  • HVAC Clean Air Act Type II, III or Universal certification.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for servicing, maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing rail equipment in compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements and Company implemented policies and procedures.
  • Accurately completes equipment inspection, work order and other forms as required in a timely manner.
  • Repair, replace and test machinery, components and systems related to rail equipment under direction of management by performing mechanical, electro-mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic activities.
  • Be capable of working with car and locomotive systems, sub-systems and components of the rail rolling stock to be maintained.
  • Perform standard maintenance tasks including mechanical, electrical, electro-pneumatic on both car and locomotive.
  • Inspection and cleaning, including servicing restrooms, as required.
  • Be skilled in use of all related hand tools such as pneumatic, electrical and hydraulic, and measuring instruments.
  • Clean and maintain work area, tools and shop equipment.
  • Maintain qualifications to support service or maintenance in the shop and yard.
  • Participate in and successfully complete required on-going training including periodic written, oral and hands-on testing.
  • Dependable to report to work at scheduled time and is seldom absent.
  • Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
