About The Position

The Utility Worker II performs manual tasks at a semi-skilled level and trains lower-level Utility Workers in the maintenance and construction of wastewater lines. This role involves working on a crew to dig up and replace sewer lines, requiring a high level of manual labor for digging, shoring-up, repairing, and back-filling. The position also includes placing and adjusting pipe in trenches to ensure proper slope, assembling and disassembling barricades, and utilizing hand tools. Safety is paramount, requiring the use of proper safety equipment and procedures, and the ability to assess situations and determine appropriate precautionary steps. The role demands good judgment and the ability to work independently. Knowledge of and the ability to utilize proper tools and equipment of the trade are essential. This position may be subject to call-out service after hours and requires maintaining all necessary licenses, certifications, and clearances without interruption. Adherence to the assigned schedule and the City's timekeeping and attendance policy is mandatory. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas CDL Class B and good driving record.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Position may require moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual tasks at a semi-skilled level in the maintenance and construction of wastewater lines.
  • Trains lower-level Utility Workers.
  • Works on crew to dig up and replace sewer lines.
  • Performs high level of manual labor to dig, shore-up, repair and back-fill.
  • Places pipe in trenches dug by backhoe or trencher.
  • Adjusts pipe to ensure proper slope.
  • Assembles and disassembles barricades.
  • Uses proper safety equipment and procedures at all times.
  • Assesses situations and makes appropriate determinations on how to proceed.
  • Works the assigned schedule and complies with City timekeeping and attendance policy.
