This position's purpose is to perform activities required to operate, maintain, construct, inspect and survey all gas system jurisdictional assets. To ensure that these activities are performed in accordance with Federal and State regulations as well as Company Policy, Company Procedures and management objectives. To provide services as an emergency first responder with the objective of ensuring public safety and protecting Company assets. To ensure the timely and accurate completion of all necessary records, timesheets, paperwork and documentation needed for accounting, regulatory, asset management and related purposes. Professionally interact with customers, regulatory authorities, and employees to ensure that the company satisfactorily meets their needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office or similar software programs for daily business tasks.
  • 3 years of related field experience.
  • Must accept Company assigned standby on rotation basis.
  • Must reside within the specified geographic call area and respond within 30 minutes to gas leak emergencies.
  • Must be available for duties during times of system emergencies.
  • Must be able to obtain Operator Qualification (O.Q.) certification based upon the requirements set forth in DOT 49 CFR 192, Subpart N.
  • Will be drug tested under the PHMSA and FMCSA drug pool.

Nice To Haves

  • Possess and maintain a valid Maine State Gas License, or obtain within two years.
  • Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 24 months of employment.
  • Requires CDL and Driver Qualification File

Responsibilities

  • Perform activities associated with the implementation of the company’s gas leak program to protect public safety, safeguard company assets and comply with Unitil’s Operations & Maintenance procedural manuals.
  • Respond as an emergency first responder to gas leak situations promptly and effectively, assess situations, and make recommendations/decisions to ensure public safety.
  • Perform scheduled gas surveys and analysis work on all company-owned facilities, including but not limited to: Annual distribution survey, Winter patrol, Business district survey, School survey, Bridge survey, Interior Atmospheric and corrosion, Service line survey, Exposed pipe survey, Public Building, Commercial Building, Pre-paving, High risk survey, Active leaks, Repaired leaks.
  • Identify, classify, and prioritize gas leaks associated with the gas distribution system to ensure public safety.
  • Prepare construction and maintenance orders for repair or replacement of facilities where gas leaks are identified.
  • Utilize GIS/GPS mapping software and the gas CMS system.
  • Test company-owned equipment such as combustible gas indicators (CGI), flame ionization units (FIU), laser methane detectors (LMD), portable methane detectors (PMD), or other approved equipment in accordance with company procedures.
  • Properly care for and maintain company equipment, including assigned vehicles and tools, and complete associated records.
  • Perform activities associated with the maintenance, construction, and inspection of the gas distribution system in compliance with Unitil’s O&M and other related procedures. This may include system gas leak repair (Emergency and Scheduled), valve inspection and repair, system patrols, facility replacement, service abandonments, system investigates, new installations, survey work, and other inspections.
  • Perform activities associated with the installation, maintenance, and inspection of Company meter sets and other jurisdictional assets in compliance with Unitil’s O&M and other related procedures. This includes meter installs, sets, changes, removals, transfers, turning gas meters on/off, turning on and relighting customer appliances, tests on gas piping, and understanding NFPA 54.
  • Perform activities associated with locating and mark-out of the gas distribution system, including safeguarding company assets during third-party excavations. This involves utilization of the Dig track damage prevention management program, line locating and mark-out, handling high-risk tickets, monitoring third-party excavations, and using GIS/GPS mapping software and the gas CMS system.
