About The Position

Under supervision, the Utility Technician performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of the sewer system. The role works rotating shifts as needed, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and inclement weather, and is designated as weather-essential personnel. The employee may be called in for emergencies and is available by telephone for emergency callouts. Work takes place indoors and outdoors in varying weather and changing operational conditions.

Requirements

Experience and training equivalent to completion of eighth grade.
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Texas Driver’s License.
Ability to work in undesirable conditions and inclement weather.
Ability to use, operate, or learn to use and operate sewer rods, a rodding machine, rod-turning motor, cement mixer, air compressor, jackhammer, shovels, picks, sledgehammer, small hand tools, pipe cutters, barricades, safety equipment, trench-shoring equipment, ropes, and harnesses.
Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
Ability to balance, crouch, feel, finger, handle, pull, push, reach, speak, stand, stoop, talk, see, and walk.
Ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.

Nice To Haves

One year of water works experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist with repairing and constructing sewer lines, manholes, and taps, and help rod sewer mains.
Clean sewer mains and manholes and remove debris.
Occasionally operate service trucks.
Assist hand-rodding crews, the vactor unit, tap crew, TV unit, and lift stations.
Help keep vehicles and tools clean and in proper working condition.
Assist with cleaning the shop and work areas.
Place barricades around streets, alleys, and other areas to protect the public and coworkers.
Work in and around traffic while wearing provided safety equipment.
Work overtime when required and remain available by telephone for emergency callouts.
Respond to emergencies and call-backs one week out of the month or for emergency repairs.
Work rotating shifts as needed.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
