About The Position

The Utility Technician I performs skilled technical work with assignments encompassing the operation, maintenance, and construction of Citrus County Utilities water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This is a full-time, field position requiring frequent travel throughout Citrus County. The scheduled days are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The role involves driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment, adhering to all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining a sewage pump truck, installation, maintenance, and repairs of water and sewer services (including meters, backflow devices, valves, piping, and other associated utility appurtenances). The position also assists in the operation and maintenance of wastewater pump stations and preventive maintenance programs, including facility and grounds maintenance. Regular on-call responsibilities are assumed, requiring 24/7 contact via a county-issued cell phone/pager for emergency water and sewer repairs. Work may be required on weekends and holidays as needed. Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment, Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class “A” with “N” endorsement.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within one (1) year certification in back flow (testing/repair), water distribution or wastewater collection.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours (including nights, weekends, and holidays).
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Requires standing and walking most of the day.
  • Involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires frequent bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, and twisting, and on occasion jumping and throwing.
  • Requires the completion of tasks that involves simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, typing, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, and working in darkness.
  • Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • May risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, electrical hazards, unprotected heights, and extreme noise.
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical examination, and drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Some course work in principles and practices of utilities (water/wastewater) operations, preferred.
