About The Position

We are currently accepting applications for a Utility Systems Technician I (Wastewater Collection) in the Utilities Division of the Community Services Department. Duties include: maintenance of the sewer systems including jetting/root cutting, inspecting, and flushing sanitary and storm lines; locating utilities; record keeping; equipment operation; and more! This position will work with a partner and have contact with the public. Under general supervision, performs skilled and moderately difficult mechanical work involving sewer utility maintenance to ensure that a safe, efficient, and uninterrupted service is provided to the municipality. This position works independently or as a member of a crew on a variety of maintenance tasks and should have a good working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Collection system and the use of all equipment assigned to this section. On occasion, this position may act as a lead person for a group of workers. This position has considerable personal contact with the public involving the disposition of complaints and checking to see that proper sewer services are maintained. Work Orders are received verbally, in writing, or electronically and the incumbent should use approved methods and procedures that are safe and efficient to complete the tasks given to them.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.) is required.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills
  • Possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and no air brake restrictions
  • Must be able to report to the Utilities Building within 30 minutes.
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • Must be able to take direction and work well with others.
  • Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Must be able to back-up fellow co-workers.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • State of Wisconsin DNR certification in Municipal Wastewater, Sanitary Sewage Collection System, and/or Municipal Water Supply with Groundwater and Distribution in Grade 1 is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled maintenance work and engages in occasional welding.
  • Works independently or with a partner performing maintenance tasks and going into sewer holes to set equipment and remove debris.
  • Operates specialized sewer maintenance equipment such as combination jet/vac, jet rodder, CCTV inspection vehicle, root cutter, pumps, compressors, etc., in a safe and economical manner.
  • Cleans catch basins, storm sewers, digesters, etc.
  • Removes standing water in streets.
  • Monitors private contracts in routine construction and emergency repairs and alterations.
  • Uses chemicals for sewer maintenance.
  • Inspects and flushes sanitary and storm lines.
  • Maintains sewer flushing records for assigned areas.
  • Troubleshoots problem areas and makes recommendations to add or repair sewer holes.
  • Works in cooperation with other City departments or divisions in connection with sewer maintenance.
  • Answers service complaints, determines City responsibility, and acts accordingly.
  • Maintains good relations with the public.
  • Gives homeowners advice on protective measures.
  • Performs Diggers Hotline locates for sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water as required.
  • Must have knowledge of computers for accessing maps.
  • Knowledge of sewer code of ordinances and enforces them.
  • Uses all safety equipment assigned to the Utilities Division.
  • Responds to emergency calls after hours.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Cross trains with and may perform the duties of the Utilities System Technician I in Water Systems.
