About The Position

This position performs basic and mid-level duties in advance of appropriate and regulatory compliant operations of water and wastewater facilities used by the County to serve its customers and the public. The role involves operating, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting equipment such as pumps, generators, pressurized vessels, blowers, and compressors, as well as performing chemical water treatment and biological wastewater treatment. The operator will adjust flow rates, operate pumps and controls, maintain accurate records, and perform calculations related to water processes. Additionally, the position involves customer service interactions, collecting and testing water and wastewater samples, monitoring regulatory compliance, and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. Reporting on malfunctions and hazards, making public presentations, and providing basic training to junior staff are also key aspects of the role. The operator will also manage inventory, perform mechanical work, operate road machinery, and complete work orders as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of training and/or experience in the operation and maintenance of advanced, complex wastewater treatment facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a NM Water Systems Level II or Wastewater Systems Level II certification.
  • Knowledge of physics and arithmetic of minor complexity, as necessary to support and justify water and wastewater treatment operations, troubleshooting, and correction.
  • Reading comprehension of mid-level complexity and writing skills.
  • Ability to learn occupational hazards and safety procedures in wastewater operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate powered and manual equipment, machinery, and tools used in wastewater plant operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to establish effective co-working relationships.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written communication.
  • Ability to observe safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic and mid-level duties in connection with the general and specialized operations of County-owned water and wastewater systems, including pump stations, treatment plants, and disposal fields.
  • Perform tasks of basic and mid-level complexity associated with the operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of equipment such as pumps, generators, pressurized vessels, blowers, and compressors.
  • Perform duties of mid-level complexity in chemical water treatment and biological wastewater treatment.
  • Adjust flow rates, operate pumps and controls, and perform repairs on equipment.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of activities and events.
  • Perform basic and mid-level calculations to determine conditions associated with water processes and operations, and report findings.
  • Perform basic duties in connection with customer service in the field and interact with technical support staff.
  • Collect water and wastewater samples in accordance with standard procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform basic laboratory testing on water and wastewater samples.
  • Read, record, and interpret meter and gauge data in the field, and maintain accurate shift logs.
  • Monitor and perform operations related to applicable regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain treatment plant work areas, grounds, equipment, and tools to ensure a safe and health-promoting environment.
  • Report verbally and in writing about malfunctions, abnormalities, and potential hazards.
  • Perform public relations duties and make presentations to the public about water and wastewater systems.
  • Provide basic training to Utility Workers and Operators I about the general operations of water and wastewater systems.
  • Perform housekeeping and cleaning of facilities when necessary.
  • Keep inventory of equipment and tools, and report losses, damages, or other conditions needing managerial attention.
  • Perform mechanical work of basic and mid-level complexity in connection with preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment.
  • Operate road machinery and associated equipment.
  • Complete work orders as assigned by a supervisor.
