About The Position

The Utility Superintendent will manage and supervise multiple pipe crews and subcontractors on multiple underground utility projects. This role involves coordinating daily construction activities to ensure efficient installation of water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and related utility systems. The superintendent will review project plans, specifications, permits, and schedules to ensure work is performed according to contract requirements, and plan manpower, equipment, and material needs to maintain project productivity and schedule. A key aspect of this role is enforcing company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices, including monitoring trench safety, shoring, excavation operations, confined space procedures, and utility locates. The superintendent will also coordinate inspections with municipalities, engineers, utility companies, and regulatory agencies, track project progress, and communicate updates to project management and the operations manager. Ensuring proper installation, testing, and documentation of underground utility systems, identifying and resolving field issues, maintaining quality control, reviewing field documentation, assisting with project planning and budgeting, and mentoring field personnel are also core responsibilities. Maintaining positive relationships with clients, inspectors, engineers, and utility representatives is crucial.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required
Minimum 8–10 years of experience in underground utility construction
Extensive knowledge of water, sewer, storm drain, and utility installation methods
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility plans
Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, trench safety requirements, and utility construction standards
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Nice To Haves

Construction management or related education is a plus
Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory or superintendent-level experience preferred
Experience with GPS, laser levels, grade control systems, and construction management software preferred
OSHA 30 certification preferred

Responsibilities

Monitor trench safety, shoring, excavation operations, confined space procedures, and utility locates.
Coordinate inspections with municipalities, engineers, utility companies, and regulatory agencies.
Track project progress and communicate schedule updates, production rates, and potential issues to project management and the operations manager.
Ensure proper installation, testing, and documentation of underground utility systems, including pressure testing, leakage testing, and inspections.
Identify and resolve field issues, conflicts, and unforeseen site conditions.
Maintain quality control standards and ensure work meets project specifications and company expectations.
Review/Approve timecards, production reports, equipment usage, and daily field documentation.
Assist with project planning, budgeting, cost control, and resource allocation.
Mentor and develop field personnel to improve performance and leadership capabilities.
Maintain positive relationships with clients, inspectors, engineers, and utility representatives.
Evaluate crew performance.
