We’re currently recruiting for a Utility Maintenance Worker - Greenway Sensitive Lands. The primary responsibilities for the job are to perform a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, inspection, repair, rehabilitation, construction, and other service activities related to Greenway Sensitive Lands. This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position covered by the provisions of an agreement between the City and the AFSCME union. The schedule for this position is M-F, 6:30am to 4pm (9/80 flex). A Utility Maintenance Worker (UMW) is expected to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12-months of employment. The City of Vancouver is committed to investing in our new employees, and scheduling UMWs into a commercial truck driving school once the new employee meets probationary expectations. Prior to employment with the City of Vancouver, all new employees will acknowledge understanding of this requirement and agree to a tier-based reimbursement plan if the employee separates from the City within three years of their employment date. Requirements

  • Maintenance Worker: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance duties, preferably within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Equivalent to a HS Diploma/GED.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Senior Maintenance Worker: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance duties, preferably within the assigned area of responsibility.

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Maintenance Worker: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain: Class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) permit within six (6) months of hire
  • Class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Valid CPR/First Aid card within three (3) months of hire
  • Flagging card within six (6) months of hire
  • Forklift Certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Defensive Driving certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Senior Maintenance Worker: Possession of: Appropriate, valid driver's license
  • Class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL)
  • Ability to obtain: Tanker endorsement with three (3) months of hire
  • Valid CPR/First Aid card within three (3) months of hire
  • Flagging card within six (6) months of hire
  • Forklift Certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Defensive Driving certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Methods and techniques of pruning, construction, maintenance and repair related to vegetation management
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of vegetation management
  • Safe work practices
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws that pertain to: storm water management
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Use of personal computers and basic software
  • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints
  • Apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve unusual or irregular problems in the area of work assigned

Responsibilities

  • Plant, water, propagate, transplant, prune, mow, monitor and otherwise maintain landscaped areas consisting of native trees and shrubs and herbaceous cover
  • Inspect and maintain City properties such as, natural areas, wetlands and mitigation sites
  • Mowing of natural grasslands and fire strips
  • Provide mechanical, chemical, cultural and biological control of invasive and noxious weeds
  • Rake leaves and clear debris and litter from walks, fields, and other facilities
  • Perform winterizing maintenance in natural areas, wetlands, and mitigation sites where applicable
  • Trim and prune trees and shrubs for natural appearance and viability; stake trees as necessary
  • Assist Specialist with irrigation and spraying
  • Perform sanitation services of public restroom(s) and litter/debris collection
