About The Position

This position involves performing maintenance, custodial, landscaping, and snow management work at Rhode Island State Police properties. The role includes maintaining all areas of Division buildings and their grounds, as well as the equipment used for these tasks. Additionally, the position requires basic maintenance and cleaning of Division vehicles. The Utility Maintenance Specialist will perform other duties as required under the supervision of the Utility Maintenance Supervisor/Utility Maintenance Manager.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of the equipment and methods used in cleaning and custodial work.
  • A working knowledge of building construction trades such as painting, plastering, carpentry, etc.
  • A working knowledge of the equipment and tools used for the above tasks and skill in handling them.
  • Familiarity with equipment used for grounds maintenance and the ability to maintain such equipment.
  • The ability to carry out instructions.
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Experience performing janitorial work or grounds maintenance work, or any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Rhode Island State Police prior to appointment.
  • Must successfully complete a 130-day working day probationary period after appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial services including sweeping, vacuuming, washing, and waxing floors and stairs.
  • Dispose of building trash in offices, restrooms, kitchens, holding areas, and cellblocks.
  • Clean and disinfect public and garage area fixtures such as toilets, showers, sinks, mirrors, counters, and benches.
  • Conduct daily inspections of buildings and equipment.
  • Restock restrooms, kitchens, and designated areas with products and supplies.
  • Clean and maintain garage areas.
  • Maintain generator logs.
  • Maintain all power equipment.
  • Keep lawn areas properly cut and free of trash, and maintain trash-free lawn and parking areas.
  • Perform snow management, including clearing/ice melting walkways, cleaning off vehicles, and directing contractors.
  • Perform minor repairs as needed, including carpentry repairs.
  • Dust and polish furniture.
  • Wax and buff wooden and/or tile floors.
  • Maintain supply of bottled water in dispensers and replace bottles as needed.
  • Replace burned-out light bulbs.
  • Wash windows.
  • Inspect building interior/exterior to assess needed repairs.
  • Paint interior/exterior of buildings at reasonable heights.
  • Escort building inspectors.
  • Perform plaster and repair work on damaged walls.
  • Perform cement and repair work on walkways, foundations, etc.
  • Wash the exterior of Division vehicles and vacuum/clean vehicle interiors.
  • Perform other tasks as required.
