About The Position

Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and protect utility infrastructure. The company has operated since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. This is a full-time employee position based in Itasca, Illinois, with a stated hourly pay range of $20.00–$30.00.

The role requires independent, self-motivated work in an assigned area, compliance with 811 dig laws, accurate utility marking, and thorough documentation. Locators must be willing to work in all weather conditions, maintain company equipment and vehicles, communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participate in an on-call rotation. The role may involve travel and overtime.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass a drug screen.
• Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
• Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
• Consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work independently without supervision.
• Value accuracy and safety.

Responsibilities

• Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
• Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
• Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
• Mark utilities accurately with paint and flags.
• Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
• Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
• Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
