Utility Locator (Elk Grove Village, IL)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator for its Elk Grove Village, Illinois location. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. This full-time employee role involves locating underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws, using modern locating technology, and accurately documenting and marking work. The position requires independent work, communication with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participation in an on-call rotation. Locators must be willing to work in all weather conditions, travel, and work overtime and flexible schedules. Pay is $20.00–$30.00 per hour, and employees are paid door to door.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locate practices.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions, overtime, and flexible schedules.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Team-oriented approach, accuracy, safety, and strong character.

- Experience with utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Familiarity with electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with all 811 dig laws.

- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
