About The Position

The Utility Locator Technician supports utility repair work throughout the City of Hampton by performing utility locating duties. The position promotes safe excavation practices, prevents damage to underground infrastructure, minimizes service disruptions, and helps maintain a safe working environment for employees, contractors, and the community. The role requires daily travel throughout the city and may involve work at night, on weekends, and on holidays. The incumbent may be designated essential personnel during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may require long hours and unusual schedules.

Requirements

• High school graduation or successful completion of the GED.
• One year of full-time equivalent experience in underground utility location or closely related experience.
• A combination of technical experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record maintained according to City of Hampton criteria.
• Ability to plan and organize work and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering plans, and drawings.
• Successfully pass a position-related background check before an offer of employment or promotion.
• Submit to alcohol and controlled-substance testing under the City’s current substance abuse policy; the position is safety sensitive.
