About The Position

The City of Redmond is seeking a Utility Engineer to join their Public Works Utilities Division. This role is crucial in designing and supporting infrastructure that meets current needs and prepares for future challenges, including climate resilience, regulatory compliance, and community growth. The Utility Engineer will represent the city and uphold its values of service, integrity, accountability, belonging, and stewardship. The Public Works Utilities Division is responsible for essential services such as drinking water supply, wastewater conveyance, and stormwater quality, focusing on sustainability, system reliability, and community trust.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of engineering experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Engineer-In-Training Certification.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Professional Engineer registration is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, designs, or reviews complete projects, programs, systems, or processes.
  • Provides engineering research on complex issues to assist senior engineers and supervisors.
  • Assigns tasks and directs engineers, technicians, and administrative staff.
  • Proposes and/or designs improvements for engineering problems.
  • Designs and prepares construction documents for public works projects in accordance with established standards of safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Prepares project plans and specifications, including drafting as needed; analyzes project requirements, physical location, and other pertinent data; prepares engineer's estimate of cost; assures that project designs comply with state, federal, and city laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Reviews engineering plans, reports, and calculations submitted by customers or consultants.
  • Visits construction sites to inspect work progress.
  • Prepares internal and external correspondence, including reports, memorandums, and presentation materials for the City Council and committees.
  • Prepares preliminary scope of work, budgets, and requests for proposals (RFPs) on projects; prepares scoring criteria for RFP respondents; and assists in selecting private consultants.
  • Communicates with city personnel, consultants, developers, contractors, other agencies, property owners, and the public to exchange information, resolve conflicts, and provide technical expertise.
  • Participates in technical committees, study groups, and task forces; attends meetings; develops and delivers oral presentations, including public presentations.
  • Provides input into the City's Geographic Information System.
  • Maintains project status files and records; prepares project descriptions and progress reports.
  • Identifies and evaluates impacts from proposed private development and proposes improvements and/or fees to mitigate these impacts.
  • Conducts peer review of technical reports and designs of private development projects prepared by consultants to ensure compliance with city codes and engineering standards.
