About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Utilities Technician to oversee the safe operation, continuous maintenance, and complex troubleshooting of our facility's critical utility systems. In this vital 3rd-shift role, you will be responsible for ensuring maximum equipment uptime, maintaining strict production quality standards, and operating our specialized boiler and industrial ammonia refrigeration units. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical mechanics, a foundational understanding of electrical systems, and a dedicated commitment to workplace safety and sanitation guidelines.

Requirements

  • Must satisfy at least one of the following baseline educational or experiential criteria: Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Operator 1 or 2 diploma from Garden City Community College.
  • Industrial Ammonia Plant Operator diploma issued by RETA.
  • Minimum of 1,000 training hours in HVAC, Refrigeration, and Heating Technology at an accredited vocational center.
  • At least five years of direct, on-the-job operational experience within an industrial ammonia refrigeration plant.
  • Demonstrated practical grasp of steam principles with the capability to debug facility pumps, piping, and valves.
  • Demonstrated practical grasp of refrigeration systems with the capability to debug facility pumps, piping, and valves.
  • Broad understanding of standard factory infrastructure, including plant air, water, waste treatment, and fire suppression systems.
  • Ownership of personal hand tools and full familiarity with foundational trade tools.
  • Proven capability to track operational records and compile structured technical reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills paired with clear, professional communication capabilities, both written and verbal.
  • Sound professional judgment regarding plant safety, security compliance, and workplace tidiness.
  • Ability to work in varied indoor/outdoor conditions (0°F to 100°F+, wet, humid, confined spaces).
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, lift over 50 lbs., and perform tasks requiring agility, such as stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Requires excellent vision (distant, peripheral, color-distinguishing) and manual dexterity for operating tools and machinery.
  • Ability to work in high-noise environments near moving mechanical parts, using necessary PPE.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, weekends and holidays, maintain work area in an orderly and sanitary condition, perform any and all duties assigned, and perform all duties in compliance with Federal, State and local codes and laws, plant rules and practices of safety, conduct, sanitation, good housekeeping and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Execute regular equipment line inspections, greasing routines, and standard system lubrications.
  • Conduct checklist-driven preventative maintenance alongside basic hardware troubleshooting, adjustment, and component replacement.
  • Manage and document facility rounds, log entries, and operational checks across the boiler house.
  • Operate basic boiler infrastructure and industrial refrigeration utilities safely.
  • Complete basic electrical assessments, including continuity tests, fuse replacements, and wiring or panel installations.
  • Safely utilize designated hand and power tools while strictly adhering to National Electrical Code (NEC) regulations.
  • Implement strict safety protocols for steam and ammonia systems, including proper deployment of S.C.B.A. gear.
  • Handle minor fabrication, machining, and basic welding tasks for equipment updates.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment issues.
  • Apply working operational knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and facility instrumentation.
  • Collaborate closely with production teams to achieve volume goals and uphold quality benchmarks.
  • Log maintenance activities via required paperwork, reporting any system failures or non-conformances immediately.
