About The Position

Under close supervision, the Utility Maintenance Technician I performs entry-level manual labor and basic maintenance tasks in support of the City’s water and wastewater systems. Work involves assisting more experienced technicians with repairs, installations, and general utility operations. This position serves as a training role and requires learning proper procedures, tools, and safety practices. Work is performed as part of a crew with regular oversight from supervisory or senior staff. This position does not exercise supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of general maintenance, construction, utility, or related field experience.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, tools, and materials used in general maintenance and utility work.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures in construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of water and wastewater system operations.
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Skills in performing basic maintenance and repair tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Skills in operating and maintaining tools and equipment used in utility work.
  • Skills in reading and understanding simple work orders, instructions, and maps.
  • Skills in communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Skills in accurately recording work activities and service information.
  • Ability to learn and apply procedures related to utility systems and field operations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, courteous, and service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours calls and participate in the on-call rotation as required.
  • Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screening, criminal background check, and motor vehicle record (MVR) review.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and field service tasks in support of the Water and Wastewater Plants, working as part of a departmental crew under supervisory direction.
  • Assists with the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of AMI water meters, including setting, programming, and replacing meters and meter boxes.
  • Conducts field metering services such as routine meter reads, data collection, and supports meter testing procedures.
  • Identifies and reports meter tampering, unauthorized usage, or potential theft of service.
  • Performs routine site inspections to identify needed repairs or potential safety hazards.
  • Assists and supports plant operators in daily water/wastewater plant operations and compliance activities.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces, and connects/disconnects utility services as directed.
  • Responds courteously to public inquiries, providing accurate information and resolving service-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Participates in rotating on-call shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance for assigned work hours.
  • This position is designated as essential during emergencies and may be assigned alternate duties to support public safety and continuity of City operations.
