About The Position

The Utilities Engineer role focuses on providing technical expertise for daily operations within regulated pharmaceutical or biotech environments. This position involves troubleshooting, supporting floor operations, leading investigations into manufacturing interruptions, and ensuring the reliability of process equipment. The engineer will also be involved in project evaluations, business case development, design reviews, and change control generation for assigned projects. Key responsibilities include developing user specifications, project charters, and maintenance strategies, as well as supporting automation and equipment qualification activities. The role also emphasizes serving as an integrator for various infrastructure systems to reduce energy and water consumption, evaluating processes for economic, safety, and environmental improvements, and supporting process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is preferred)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with utility systems in a regulated pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills (English and Spanish)
  • Extensive expertise in pharmaceutical utility systems, including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, compressors, pumps, fuel systems, and associated infrastructure, with proven experience in equipment assessment, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
  • Strong capital project and recapitalization, including development of URS, project charters, scopes of work, CAPEX justifications, vendor selection, cost estimates, and execution of multi-year asset replacement programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise to assist in daily operations.
  • Provide technical support for the floor operations.
  • Lead troubleshooting and investigation on unexpected issues leading to manufacturing interruptions or delays.
  • Provide technical expertise for installation, operation, maintenance, and reliability of process equipment.
  • Provide technical assistance to ensure issues are addressed quickly and documented correctly.
  • Assist in the development of the process Control Strategy.
  • Perform Project evaluations and Business Case development.
  • Participate on Design Reviews.
  • Change control generation for the projects assigned.
  • Development of User Specifications & Project Charter.
  • Participate on project meetings for planning and execution.
  • Support startup activities.
  • Provide guidance on key elements of return to service requirements for equipment after interventions, such as maintenance.
  • Write/Review Operational procedures or special instructions as needed.
  • Work on the development of Maintenance Strategies (equipment ID, spares, Job plans) applicable to the projects assigned.
  • Support Automation activities related to projects/operations.
  • Serve as an integrator for electrical, mechanical, process and building infrastructure to provide solutions that can help to reduce energy and water consumption in a cost-effective approach.
  • Evaluate process from an economical, safety and environmental point of view to identify areas for improvement.
  • Assure safety and environmental procedures and change control requirements are followed during the execution of the projects and operational modifications.
  • Support and Lead Process Improvement initiatives within the Utilities Operations (Root Cause Analysis, FMEA & A3 exercise etc.).
  • Modify, review and approve P&ID’s
  • Support equipment qualification activities.
  • Comply with Learning Plan due dates.
