About The Position

The Utilities Accountant supports accurate and timely financial reporting by preparing account reconciliations, journal entries, financial analyses, and supporting schedules. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position works closely with Accounting, FP&A, AP/AR, and Operations teams to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with company policies and accounting standards. The Utilities Accountant participates in monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes; assists with budgeting and forecasting activities; and supports financial controls, audits, and process improvements. The position is a hands-on role that requires strong attention to detail, sound accounting knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of ASPE and US GAAP.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including PivotTables and lookup functions.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA designation or enrollment in the CPA program is preferred.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting (e.g., U.S. and Canadian entities) is an asset.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (utilities, energy, district energy, or similar) is an asset.
  • Sage X3 experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare general ledger account reconciliations and supporting analyses.
  • Prepare recurring journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Reconcile subledgers to general ledger accounts and investigate variances.
  • Assist with month-end fixed asset accounting and depreciation processes.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for review.
  • Support variance analysis by researching and documenting fluctuations in income statement and balance sheet accounts.
  • Work with FP&A and operational teams to explain transaction-level variances.
  • Prepare supporting schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Assist with preparation of financial statement support and note disclosure schedules.
  • Prepare intercompany reconciliations and assist with settlement of intercompany transactions.
  • Maintain fixed asset records, including capital project tracking, CWIP, transfers, and depreciation.
  • Support the Accounting Manager by documenting workflows, identifying potential control gaps, and assisting with enhancements and periodic testing of financial control processes to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Assist with preparing and filing of quarterly and annual sales tax returns at the state and municipal levels across multiple US jurisdictions.
  • Support year-end audits and tax compliance by preparing detailed working papers and responding to audit and tax inquiries and providing schedules and documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as FP&A, AP/AR, Corporate, and Project Management, to obtain information and resolve routine accounting matters.
  • Complete special projects, ad hoc requests, and other analyses as assigned.
