About The Position

UST (Underground Storage Tank) Compliance Specialist UST = Underground Storage Tank compliance (fuel retail/petroleum/environmental) — this is NOT a financial, HIPAA, SOX, or legal compliance role. Please do not apply unless you have direct experience with USTs, fuel retail environmental regulations, or petroleum/UST-adjacent industries. Full - Time or Part-Time | Exempt or Non-Exempt | Remote with in-office opportunities in NC and MA | Reports to the Fuel Facilities UST Compliance Manager | $25 - $35/hour ($52,000 - $72,800 annual). The role involves managing UST compliance at retail fueling sites, acting as an extension of client environmental compliance teams. This includes filling gaps, handling surge work, or providing outsourced solutions. The company ensures compliance programs run smoothly, records are maintained, and violations are prevented. The specialist will work with teammates, clients, contractors, and regulators to ensure UST systems are compliant through excellent documentation, supported by a service model that unites people, process, and platforms.

Requirements

  • Two or more years in UST or AST compliance, with an owner or operator, an environmental consultancy, or a state program.
  • A working command of 40 CFR Part 280 and at least one state UST program.
  • Class A or Class B operator training, or the readiness to complete it.
  • Comfort working directly with owners, operators and regulators.
  • Solid Excel skills and fluency with a compliance platform.
  • Availability for the shared on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating agency inspections, putting the compliance packet together, and driving notices of violation through to a documented return to compliance.
  • Reviewing monthly CSLD, SIR and interstitial monitoring results, chasing down whatever doesn't pass, and making sure suspected release reporting happens inside the state's window.
  • Scheduling and verifying annual and triennial line and tank tightness testing, ATG certification, Stage I/II vapor recovery, cathodic protection rectifier readings, and 30-day monthly visual walkthrough inspections.
  • Triaging alarms, dispatching the right contractor, and following through until the closeout documentation is in the system.
  • Tank registration, permitting, air permit renewals, and financial assurance and state insurance fund applications for new-to-industry, raze and rebuilds, tank replacements and removals, tank closures and ownership transfers.
  • Coordinating agency reporting and tracking remediation response and component repairs through completion.
