About The Position

SmartVet Veterinary Services in Normal, Illinois, is seeking an Urgent Care Associate Veterinarian to join their expanding practice. SmartVet offers a unique blend of mobile veterinary care and services at their fully equipped hospital. The urgent care team handles pets with illnesses and injuries needing prompt attention, such as gastrointestinal issues, wounds, lameness, respiratory symptoms, urinary problems, ear and skin conditions, minor trauma, and other same-day medical needs. The practice is equipped with the necessary tools, diagnostics, and support for efficient patient care. The team is described as welcoming, hardworking, and collaborative, valuing strong communication and teamwork. Previous urgent care or emergency experience is beneficial but not required; experienced general practitioners interested in urgent care are encouraged to apply. The ideal schedule involves primarily weekend shifts, but alternative schedules may be considered for the right candidate. Full-time, part-time, and creative scheduling options are available.

Requirements

  • DVM or VMD degree from an accredited university
  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in Illinois
  • Eligibility to obtain DEA/BNDD
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates professional and courteous presentation consistently with staff and clients
  • Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
  • Practice high-quality, evidence-based medicine
  • Comfortable making timely clinical decisions
  • Value teamwork and a positive workplace culture
  • Enjoy treating urgent and same-day medical cases

Responsibilities

  • Examine and treat companion animals to detect and determine the nature of disease or injuries.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment and collect diagnostic samples as well as interpret results.
  • Advise pet owners on preventative care and treatment options.
  • Perform surgery and prescribe medication as needed.
  • Provide counsel around pet end of life care.
  • Maintain patients’ medical records.
  • Ensures compliance with veterinary ethics and relevant statues, policies, and procedures.
