About The Position

The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of city landscaping and grounds. Job duties consist of related refuse maintenance duties. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of attractive municipal grounds. FLSA status is Non-Exempt. This position starts as an entry-level position in the Urban Management department and has some growth opportunity.

Requirements

• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds repeatedly.
• Job duties are typically performed while sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.
• Employees frequently lift light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• Job duties are typically performed outdoors, occasionally in extreme or inclement weather.
• Employees are exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.
• Job duties require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
• Job duties require the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
• Job duties require the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear.
• Job candidates must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress.
• Job duties require regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
• Knowledge of department and city policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of work safety principles.
• Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in the course of work.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
• Knowledge of traffic safety.
• Knowledge and skill in the operation and maintenance of lawn care equipment.
• Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Ability to perform manual labor for an extended period, under various weather conditions.
• Must provide proof of your legal right to work in the United States.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Willing to work overtime.
• Willing to cooperate with the workload of the department.
• Willing to comply with City of Prattville rules and regulations.
• Must submit to drug screenings for this safety sensitive position.
• Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.

Nice To Haves

• One (1) year of experience in performing heavy manual labor preferred.
• One (1) year of experience in the operation of trucks and other light-duty automotive equipment preferred.
• High School Diploma/GED preferred.

Responsibilities

• Rakes and cleans grounds.
• Trims, edges, and weeds.
• Edges curbs and sidewalks.
• Participates in greenhouse plant production.
• Lays sods; installs plans.
• Removes, replaces, and prunes trees.
• Installs and maintains site irrigation systems.
• Applies fertilizer, insecticides, and pesticides.
• Cleans culverts, drains, and ditches.
• Maintains landscaping and installs plants and mulch.
• Breaks up beaver dams.
• Operates a variety of construction equipment.
• Installs seasonal lighting and decorations.
• Performs pre- and post-trip equipment inspections.
• Cleans equipment interior and exterior.
• Performs minor maintenance and repair duties; checks and adds fluid.
• Reports major repair needs to supervisor.
• Builds and installs decorative displays.
• Cleans and organizes the office.
• Communicates and interacts with the public.
• Assists in the removal of dead animals from the right-of-way.
• Assists other departments as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
