About The Position

An Urban Forester plans, develops and implements urban tree management and reforestation projects and monitors contractors’ work for quality and conformance to City policies and regulations. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week which may include evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and be on 24-hour on-call duty in emergencies or for special events. Work is performed outdoors where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, insects, and damaged or tottering trees may be encountered. Work may require moderate physical exertion such as standing and stretching for long periods of time when examining trees and tree planting sites.

Requirements

  • Have a bachelor’s degree forestry, arboriculture, or horticulture from an accredited college or university.
  • Have three years of experience in urban tree planting, tree management, inspecting and evaluating trees, or diagnosing and prescribing treatment for tree problems and diseases.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Must obtain and maintain current certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture within six months of hire.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, rules and recurrent codes and regulatory standards governing natural and tree development.
  • Knowledge of general forestry management practices.
  • Skill in identifying tree diseases and pests.
  • Skill in coordinating projects involving multiple agencies.
  • Ability to manage long-term projects in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to independently conduct investigations in all types of environmental conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and make oral presentations.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
