About The Position

The Urban Designer will contribute to the success of the team by using their experience and knowledge of urban design to design and review documents according to established standards. This role involves guiding project due diligence, including mapping physical site opportunities and constraints, synthesizing key performance metrics and relevant regulatory parameters. The position requires the strategic application of common urban design benchmarks, precedent imagery and data, based upon project and client needs. The Urban Designer will drive creative urban design concepts and strategies for conceptual plan frameworks of open space, circulation and land use. They will initiate approaches to the creation and modification of urban design documents, drawings, perform advanced calculations, and ensure the incorporation of design intent. This role involves outlining, mocking up, and developing urban design graphics, reports, standards, guidelines, and presentation materials, as well as preparing content for outside design and consulting partners. The position requires knowledge of urban design concepts for a range of project types and the ability to develop strategies for urban design frameworks, systems diagrams, and conceptual plans under the guidance of a Senior Urban Designer. The Urban Designer will support team design content creation and project organization, demonstrating a reliable understanding of the relationship between design and feasibility. Continuous contribution to the upgrade of the urban design process and team workflows, with excellent tools and systems management to produce high-quality deliverables, is expected. The role involves initiating urban design concepts based on knowledge of site planning strategies (including land use mix, block sizes, open space, building and street types, and placemaking). Assistance with client presentations and external events is required, with the potential to lead sub-topic or table conversations. Active participation in collaborative team design meetings and the collaborative incorporation of integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects with multi-disciplinary teams are key. The Urban Designer will lead design teams in completing tasks and responsibilities on projects within scope, schedule, and budget, in an organized, timely, and consistent manner. The ability to prioritize obligations based on task prioritization and understanding of contractual obligations and client expectations is essential. The role aims to develop successful client experiences through excellence in design and information coordination. Reading and understanding Agreements to Work within budget, schedule, work plan, and client constraints is necessary. Assistance with marketing opportunities, interviews, proposals, work plans, and schedules is also required. The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and foster a commitment to external and internal client service are important. Proactive engagement of staff to mentor and direct the work of less experienced staff, active promotion of a collaborative culture and innovative design alternatives, and efforts towards successful project delivery are expected. Demonstration of effective conflict resolution techniques with project team members is also a requirement. Assistance with HOK document QA/QC and Best Practice management standards, and appropriate document archiving, are part of the role. Active participation in project and team quality control reviews and self-checking work for accuracy, omissions, legibility, and document completion are also required.

Requirements

  • Master’s, or Bachelor’s, degree in urban design, planning or architecture.
  • 5-10 years’ experience; or equivalent in appropriate education and experience required.
  • LEED credential required within 12 months of employment.
