About The Position

The Upper School Teacher - Science is responsible for imparting knowledge and learning skills to students in their assigned class, adhering to professional standards and contributing to the Thomas MacLaren School's community of learners. This role involves demonstrating commitment to the school's mission and vision, believing in the potential of all students, and fostering a sense of wonder and inquiry. The teacher will plan and implement instructional programs, contribute to the school's community, and lead Morning Assembly. Professional responsibilities include striving for continuous improvement, conferring with parents and administrators, using English skillfully, communicating clearly, maintaining accurate records, and performing other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School. The role also includes delivering the Thomas MacLaren curriculum, planning instructional objectives, using diverse teaching strategies, incorporating interventions, following IEP/Section 504 guidelines, demonstrating sound teaching and classroom management skills, and maintaining a safe learning environment. Teacher/student relationships involve enforcing school policies, maintaining discipline, providing timely feedback, encouraging high achievement, and assisting with student orientation. Teacher/parent relationships include providing feedback, initiating communication, encouraging parent visits, and participating in conferences. Teacher/staff relationships involve regular communication, cooperation with colleagues, committee work, and full participation in the community of learners, including faculty seminars.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve well as Thomas MacLaren teacher.
  • BA required.
  • Teachers of math, science, English, social studies/history must hold BA in content area or 36 hours in content area or PRAXIS test completion in content area within one year of employment.

  • Willingness to take direction from lead teachers and Head of Upper School.

Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School.
  • Attend mandatory Teacher Training Institute each summer.
  • Deliver Thomas MacLaren curriculum as charged.
  • Work with the Head of Upper School and teacher trainers to learn curriculum and methodology of courses assigned.
  • Plan long-term as well as short-term objectives of instruction.
  • Use a variety of appropriate teaching strategies, instructional materials/activities, and teaching modes to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
  • Incorporate interventions and accommodations deemed necessary by the Head of Upper School.
  • Follow guidelines for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan.
  • Demonstrate sound professional teaching and classroom management skills to facilitate learning.
  • Maintain an appropriate and safe learning environment.
  • Enforce school policies.
  • Maintain discipline and good order in the classroom.
  • Provide students with constructive feedback about their work in a timely manner.
  • Encourage students to strive for high achievement.
  • Encourage and equip students to become the agents of their own education.
  • Assist with Student Orientation and its implementation in the classroom.
  • Act as an effective monitor of students when on duty.
  • Provide frequent and effective feedback concerning attainment of learning goals to parents.
  • Initiate communication with parents.
  • Encourage parents to visit the class.
  • Participate in biannual parent-teacher evaluation conferences.
  • Communicate regularly with the Head of Upper School, Lead Teachers and co-workers on all matters pertaining to assignments.
  • Cooperate with other staff in sharing responsibilities and implementing group decisions.
  • Work effectively on any faculty committee to which he/she is assigned.
  • Participate fully in the community of learners, e.g., prepares for and attends all Faculty Seminars.
