Consultants' primary task is to collaborate with UT undergraduate students in one-on-one consultations to help them improve as writers. They may also assist with day-to-day operations, such as staffing the front desk, giving presentations to classes or other campus groups on behalf of the UWC, representing the UWC at tabling events or functions, and providing consultations during undergraduate-focused writing retreats. In addition, consultants conduct original writing center-related research and contribute to ongoing projects in the Center, such as project groups and public relations efforts. We seek applicants from every graduate discipline. Writing consultants conduct 45-minute sessions with students to help them become stronger writers. Depending on qualifications, consultants may be asked to work with undergraduate students, graduate students, or both. They will deliver presentations in classrooms across the University; create handouts and other materials to support student learning; and complete other relevant duties as assigned. Employment is contingent upon being registered as a UT Austin graduate student for at least 9 hours per semester. Employees are required to attend orientation in August and ongoing training events throughout the academic year. The Office of Human Resources and the Graduate School have posted answers to frequently asked questions about insurance eligibility, minimum enrollment requirements, maximum number of semesters a graduate student can work, and other issues pertinent to working as a student.
