About The Position

The Unit Secretary is responsible for assisting assigned patients in the activities, treatments, procedures and tests under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or other designated individuals. The duties of the nursing assistant are carried out in accordance with the state and local laws and the nursing policies and procedures of the utilizing institution.

Requirements

High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
Proficiency with medical vocabulary and general understanding of hospital policy & procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Nice To Haves

Completion of a Secretarial course and/or a Medical terminology course.
Previous experience as a Nursing Unit Secretary in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

Performs and aids the physician and nurse with a variety of treatments and patient care procedures.
Reports pertinent information to the immediate supervisor and gives a general report on all patients at the end of each shift. Reports vital signs and records accurately and within a timely manner.
Observes, reports and records patient care, symptoms, treatments and reactions following approved policies and procedures of the institution.
Assists and participates in in-service education.
Maintains a clean environment in patient rooms and work area.
Notifies RN of changes in patient condition in a timely manner and documents appropriately.
Performs and/or assists patients with personal care activities, such as baths, showers, skin and hair care, and oral hygiene. Provides specific patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and/or other designated individuals.
Contributes to patient and family teaching while performing procedures as instructed.
Performs other tasks or special assignments as necessary to maintain proper operations and patient care. Completes other duties as assigned and demonstrates flexibility with job responsibilities in all areas.
Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
