About The Position

The Unit Secretary works cooperatively with all members of the health care team in performing clerical and receptionist duties and assists clinical personnel with nonclinical duties. The Unit Secretary acts as a receptionist on the unit, answers the phone and patient call system in a timely manner, uses proper phone etiquette, greets patients, visitors, physicians, and employees, ascertains needs and routes accordingly, and takes and relays messages to personnel on the unit in a timely manner, ensuring excellent customer service. They also schedule patients, after obtaining demographic and insurance information/authorizations, into the scheduling system in a timely manner. Additionally, the Unit Secretary ensures medical charts for new patients are prepared prior to the date of service, pulls medical records for established patients prior to the date of service, and updates, copies, and files medical records as directed. They also maintain and collect statistics related to departmental operations as directed.

Requirements

  • Acts as receptionist on the unit: answers phone and patient call system in a timely manner uses proper phone etiquette

  • Reports matters requiring Nursing intervention immediately
  • Supports patient care within scope of a practice as directed by other members of the healthcare team
  • Utilizes resources in an economical manner
