About The Position

This is a multi-functional role requiring incumbents to be cross-trained to perform Unit Secretary duties as well as at least one other clinical support job, spending at least 20% of time in each role. Cross-training may include Patient Care Technician, Nursing Specialty Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Monitor Technician. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the role provides excellent customer service, clerical and administrative services, monitors, orders, and stocks supplies, and maintains a safe work environment. Additional functions, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, may include observing cardiac monitors, data collection, performing basic nursing procedures, monitoring and documenting patient responses, and assisting with treatments and procedures. The specific accountabilities for the clinical support roles are detailed in their respective job descriptions. The percentage of time spent in clinical support may vary by unit, but will be at least 20%.

Requirements

  • Unit Secretary training program or on-the-job training.
  • Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech or nursing fundamentals class preferred.
  • No experience required.
  • In lieu of US training, will accept 6 months of clerical or healthcare related experience or completion of nursing fundamentals course.
  • After hire, US/Monitor Techs are required to attend the formal arrhythmia training class and successfully complete the Prisma Health Arrhythmia exam with a minimum passing score within 2 attempts.
  • Successful completion of the arrhythmia exam must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Arrhythmia competencies must be maintained on an annual basis if selected into a monitor tech role.

Responsibilities

  • Performs effective customer service skills, responding to patients, families, and staff with kindness, courtesy, professionalism, and efficiency.
  • Walks visitors to their destination and answers phones/intercoms in a friendly manner.
  • Participates in patient care rounding in collaboration with unit staff, including daily introductions to patients/families using AIDET.
  • Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager.
  • Monitors daily supplies, orders office and special supplies, monitors PAR levels, and maintains/organizes unit supply rooms.
  • Performs general reception and clerical duties at the nurse’s station, responding to patient calls via intercom or in person.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support, including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards, including cleaning equipment.
  • Performs duties of a PCT/NST/Certified Nursing Assistant/Monitor Tech as described in their respective job functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
