About The Position

This is a full-time Unit Secretary position in the Adult Emergency Department, working nights. The role involves completing clerical duties related to patient scheduling, admissions, procedures, transfers, surgeries, discharges, and deaths under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Unit Secretary will also handle incoming calls, ensure confidential and accurate communication of patient information, complete requisitions and data entry, and contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment. The position requires effective communication with team members, patients, and families, as well as taking initiative for professional growth and development. The role is expected to be performed in an organized, quiet, and efficient manner, with the ability to cope with stressful situations. The Unit Secretary will also complete assigned unit responsibilities and assist other staff members when time permits, providing age/developmental appropriate patient care.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Performs effectively with frequent workload changes and competing demands
  • Ability to develop transcription skills

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a unit secretary course or equivalent Unit Secretary experience preferred.
  • Clerical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Completes clerical duties for patient scheduling, admissions, procedures, transfers, surgeries, discharges and deaths under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Handles and screens incoming calls and transmits messages as necessary.
  • Contributes to a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established procedures.
  • Ensures complete, confidential, accurate, and timely communication of patient information.
  • Completes requisitions, data entry, and nursing communication forms.
  • Communicates to the team, co-workers, patients and family members in an effective, positive and professional manner.
  • Takes personal responsibility and initiative for performance, professional growth and development.
  • Conducts work in an organized, quiet, efficient manner and demonstrates ability to cope with stressful situations.
  • Completes assigned unit responsibilities and assists other staff members in completion of their duties when time permits.
  • Provides age/developmental appropriate patient care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
