About The Position

The Unit Secretary-Adult works under the direction of a registered nurse to perform the secretarial and/or clerical aspects of patient care; ensures optimum patient flow by keeping the charge nurse informed of any admissions, transfers or discharge orders; serves as department and/or unit receptionist; maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and forms; utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service, safety, and professionalism; contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce, patient, and visitor population. Performs other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of English grammar and punctuation in preparation of correspondence and reports.
  • Demonstrates good computer and typing skills.
  • Ability to input data into computer.
  • Good eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to speak clearly in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to listen well and interact appropriately with patients, visitors, employees and outside agencies.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with supervisor, other employees, patients (as appropriate) and outside agencies.
  • Ability to effectively intervene with agitated or hostile clientele.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to concentrate on several assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to execute duties in an efficient manner with attention to detail.
  • Ability to receive and accurately carry out instructions.
  • Able to distinguish colors, hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone.
  • Able to identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place.
  • Able to see adequately to read computer screens and written documents necessary to position.
  • Able to discern temperature variances through touch.
  • Ability to perform Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) techniques for physical restraint of patients as necessary, required within ninety (90) days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more years of college education preferred.
  • One or more years of clerical experience preferred.
  • Healthcare, psychiatric or chemical dependency experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and hospital billing systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of specific age groups preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association preferred.
